From Boy to Man:
Family Rites of Passage

Manual

Is there a need for rites-of-passage for adolescent males in western cultures and societies?  Stephen Hicken’s answer is YES!

Stephen Hicken and family members have initiated eight young men including his four sons and four nephews.  Hicken organized and led his first family-based rite-of-passage in 1995 and most recently for his youngest son in 2009.

This resource consists of a set of two DVDs that features a 2007 workshop offered by Hicken titled From Boy to Man: Family Rites of Passage for Adolescents and a manual that explains in detail how to create family rites of passage for young males.

Workshop elements include:

  • Why are family adolescent rites-of-passage important?
  • Ingredients for a rites-of-passage trip
  • Personal preparation for the young man and elder initiators
  • How to handle obstacles
  • Just do it: making it happen

Stephen Hicken is an active member and a leader of the Men As Learners and Elders (M.A.L.Es.) program in Northern California.  He currently works with WAGES, an  organization which builds green businesses for low-income women.  Hicken lives in Castro Valley, CA, with his wife of twenty-nine years and with two of his four sons.
